Curtis Ganderson agrees with Jim Riggleman that baseball is not a physically taxing sport. However, Granderson does point out how the sport does wear one down:
Still, there are some categories that makes baseball a difficult sport to endure. First, our season is the longest out of all the major sports. Our regular season is 162 games and though you may not play in all of the games, you’re still good for about 150 or more games. Also remember that we have 30 spring training games prior to the regular season. so players might get about 150-190 games a year.
The mental side of our game can also be very challenging, which can lead to some physical fatigue. Knowing that you have to play a three-game series in Texas in the middle of the summer with 90 percent humidity and when it’s 95 degrees at game time after you just flew in from another city and landed at 3:30 a.m. are just some of the things that can mentally wear on you as a player. By trying to play in those conditions you can see how the physical side starts to wear down, too.
When I was at ESPN, we were sitting around the research room discussing which sport played the best athletes, and the consensus was basketball. I believe, however, that’s because ultimate Frisbee is not a professional sport.
