The Yankees defeated the Angels 5-3 to reduce their magic number for home field advantage to 13. Mark Teixeira knocked out three hits and drove in two runs, and tripled for the first time since 2007. Mariano Rivera earned his 40th save, the seventh time he’s reached that level in his career and the first time since 2005.
That gave the Rangers a chance to pick up a game on the Angels, but they fell flat against the Athletics, losing 9-0. Brett Tomko pitched a three-hit shutout walking none and striking out three. That’s only the second shutout of Tomko’s career. The A’s did not hit a home run, but knocked out seven doubles on their way to a victory. With the loss, Texas also falls 4 1/2 games out in the wild card race.
