Games of the Day

Daisuke Matsuzaka returns to the mound for the Red Sox, and Boston throws him right into the fire as he faces the Angels and John Lackey. This looks like a test of Dice-K’s playoff readiness as LAnaheim is likely to be Boston’s first round opponent, and they own the second best offense in the American League. If Matsuzaka pitches well tonight, he becomes an important part of the Red Sox playoff rotation. John Lackey’s recent improvement make the Angels playoff rotation more impressive. Since the All-Star break he’s 6-3 with a 2.29 ERA, walking just 20 in 82 2/3 innings.

The Braves try to win their fifth straight game as rookie star Tommy Hanson hosts Pat Misch and the New York Mets. Since becoming a starter, Misch great reduced the number of home runs he allowed. Hanson is on a roll, posting a 2.21 ERA over his last seven starts. He’s struck out 44 in 40 2/3 innings, allowing just 31 hits.

Finally, the Rockies and Giants continue their series with Ubaldo Jimenez taking on Barry Zito. Jimenez’s ERA hasn’t been helped by the road this season despite better HR, BB and K rates away from Coors Field. His 2.48 ERA against the Giants this season is only good for a 2-2 record. Zito pitched even better against the Rockies this season, holding them to a 0.48 ERA in three starts. He’s pitched to them carefully, walking eight but only allowing 13 hits.

Enjoy!
