Rather than going with a closer by committee, Ron Gardenhire decided on a single closer:
The Minnesota Twins have named right-hander Jon Rauch their closer, replacing four-time All-Star Joe Nathan, who is out for the season after undergoing elbow surgery.
…
Gardenhire says it was important to define bullpen roles before the regular season begins so his relievers could focus. Rauch had 17 saves for the Washington Nationals in 2008, his only prior experience as a closer.
Rauch pitched well in his short stint with the Twins last year, striking out 14 in 15 2/3 innings. His career strikeout rate is much lower than that, so Minnesota’s defense is going to be the closer as much as Rauch.
Rauch tried to close a few games with the Diamondbacks. Don’t have the numbers, but they weren’t good.
