Phil Hughes lost his no-hitter in the eighth, but the Yankees held on to defeat the Oakland Athletics 3-1. Hughes struck out 10 and gave up one hit and one walk over 7 1/3 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.19. Ben Sheets pitched a pretty good game for Oakland, allowing just two runs over six innings. His signing is looking good right now as he sports a 2.74 ERA.
With the loss, Oakland falls into a tie with the Seattle Mariners, who stayed on a roll with a 4-1 win over the Detroit Tigers Baltimore Orioles. The bullpens took the night off as both Kevin Millwood and Felix Hernandez went the distance. Hernandez matched Roy Halladay in pitches, using an efficient 113 to finish his nine innings of work. An amaing 82 of those pitches went for strikes. The only run against him was unearned. He held the Orioles to one base at a time as all nine hits against him were singles.
The Tigers squeaked by the Angels as Detroit scored two runs in the top of the ninth for a 4-3 victory. Miguel Cabrera doubled, and his home run leading off the ninth hung a blown save on Brian Fuentes, tying the game. Ramon Santiago picked up the game winning hit later in the inning, part of his two-hit attack. Cabrera is now slugging .678 on the season with an isolated power of .305.
Chris Carpenter struck out ten in seven innings of work and Colby Rasmus hit two home runs as the Cardinals downed the Diamondbacks 9-4. Rasmus added a triple as he raised his slugging percentage to .705, 66 points ahead of Albert Pujols. Colby’s home run in the ninth broke a 4-4 tie, as the Diamondbacks bullpen gave up five runs in the inning. That brought the bullpen’s ERA to 7.21.
The Mariners beat the Orioles 4-1 last night. The Angels fell to the Tigers 4-3.
