No Man is Dave Eiland

John Harper in the New York Daily News wants the Yankees to bring back Dave Eiland to straighten out A.J. Burnett:

Pitching coaches, however, usually say that adjustments in mechanics are what lead to better execution, especially when pitchers get themselves in trouble. Sometimes it’s a simple reminder of this or that, but it’s a language unique to pitching coaches and their pitchers.

In truth, Eiland’s absence hasn’t been an issue with the other Yankee starters. But Burnett is emotionally fragile and mechanically challenged, a pitcher who desperately needs guidance and support. Eiland, a calming influence and a coach with an eye for mechanics, filled that role nicely.

The problem is that Eiland is away for personal reasons. My guess is that those personal reasons must be pretty compelling if he can’t even come back for a day to work with Burnett.

It’s also quite possible that Burnett is hurt. His numbers are so bad, I can’t believe it’s just a mechanical flaw. Burnett’s been tutored long enough by coaches that he should be able to look at video and figure out what’s going on. I bet he has a minor injury that’s preventing him from correcting his mechanics.
