Error in Relief

Dan Haren tried to complete his start against the St. Louis Cardinals, but he gives up two singles to start the bottom of the ninth inning. Aaron Heilman comes on, and throws away a bunt that closes the game to 5-4. He then induces a grounder to short with the infield in to hold the runner at third, then another to first. This time, the runner tries to score, but Adam LaRoche throws it away and the Cardinals win 6-5. Heilman didn’t pitch badly, but he rushed the throw to third on the bunt, and that put him in a tough situation.

Haren homered in the game, his seventh extra-base hit of the season. He’s now hitting .435 with a .630 slugging percentage on the season.
