Diamondbacks Purge

The Diamondbacks have fired A.J. Hinch and Josh Byrnes. I can’t say I’m surprised at Hinch’s firing, given the poor record of the Diamondbacks. Byrnes comes as a bit of a surprise:

He was hired in 2005 and given an eight-year extension in 2008. But, uh, so much for that.

Byrnes was the one who took the risk of hiring Hinch, so when A.J. went down, Byrnes went with him it seems. Another manager fired after winning a game.

The news comes from Bob Nightengale’s twitter feed. No word on a replacement yet.

Update: The Diamondbacks were 89-123 under Hinch, a .420 winning percentage. That ranked 25th in the majors since he took over. Whatever he and Byrnes tried to do, it didn’t improve the team.

Update: Here’s the story from USA Today.

Update: Just how bad was Arizona? They were giving up over a run more per game than they were scoring, 5.65 allowed, 4.58 scored. While they were second in home runs, two behind the Brewers entering today, they had allowed 20 more than any other team. How much of that was Byrnes assembling a poor pitching staff and defense, or Hinch just pushing the wrong buttons, I don’t know. I can’t wait to hear what the players have to say about all this.
