Cycling is Big in Colorado

Purple Row reviews Carlos Gonzalez’s cycle Saturday night, the sixth in Rockies history. Carlos completed the feat with an upper deck, walk-off home run. That gives us four cycles in the season and three in the month of July. The last time there were three cycles in July was 1970, when Tony Horton, Tommie Agee and Jim Ray Hart completed the feat in a one-week span from July 2nd through July 8th. The Rockies beat the Cubs 6-5 and have won three in a row after losing eight straight.

Update: We’re in a high cycle period. Since the start of the 2001 season, players hit for 45 cycles. From 1991 to 2000, players collected 28 cycles. There are more player games in this decade, as MLB played with 30 teams the entire times and there were no work stoppages, but that doesn’t seem to make up for enough of the difference. Doubles/AB and HomeRuns/AB are up slightly from the previous ten years, but triples continue their constant climb downward. It’s just been a good decade for cycles.
