Juan Moves On

Juan Samuel will stay with the Orioles, but will not return to coaching.

Samuel’s primary role will be to spend some time at the team’s baseball academy in the Dominican Republic — where he is from — and evaluate operations there.

The original plan had been for Samuel to return to coaching third base, the job he held until June 4, when he took over as interim manager for the fired Dave Trembley. However, Samuel decided that it would be better for both sides if he removed himself from the situation. The rest of the coaching staff is expected to remain intact under Showalter through the end of the season.

Juan is correct here. Buck should get a fresh start, and he should also get to choose his coaching staff at some point, something other new managers were not allowed to do.

The team did not improve a great deal under Juan. A 15-39 mark under Dave Trembley (.277) was turned into a .333 winnings percentage (17-34) under Samuel. Juan was put in a difficult situation and handled it with grace. The Orioles should reward him with some kind of front office job next season if Samuel wants to stay on.

This is really a lateral move for Samuel. He started the season as Third Base Coach and ends it still working for the organization in the Dominican Republic. I’m not sure what the effect is on his salary.
