Getting Grounders

Trevor Cahill spun a three hit shutout Monday night as the Athletics defeated the Royals 6-0. He only struck out three batters, and for the season his K per 9 stands at 5.23, a low value. His FIP is about a run and a half higher than his ERA. What Cahill does is induce a lot of ground balls. In addition to the three hits, he walked four batters. Five of those seven base runners were removed with double plays as Cahill collected 15 ground ball outs on the night. If you look at the batted balls against him, 56.7% are on the ground, and only 14% are line drives. He’s fifth in the majors in percent ground balls, and that’s helping his ERA look much better than his FIP.
