Deep Freese

David Freese worsened his ankle injury in a rehabilitation game, and will miss the rest of the season:

Freese was hurt running the bases Monday night during his first rehab game with Double-A Springfield. He pulled up while trying to score from second base on a single and reached down and grabbed his right ankle before limping off the field.

The rookie has been on the disabled list since June 28 with a deep bone bruise in his right ankle and a broken toe on his left foot, but general manager John Mozeliak said the new injury is not believed to be connected to the bone bruise.

Freese was one of the better batters on the Cardinals, helping to make Pujols and Holliday a little more dangerous. Felipe Lopez has hit well in Freese’s stead, but not quite as well. Lopez’s career numbers aren’t that good, so I don’t expect that to last.
