Keeping On

The Giants defeated the Rockies 10-0 Tuesday night, their sixth time scoring in double digits since July 3rd, when they beat the Rockies 11-8. In that time, the team has done a tremendous job getting on base, posting a .342 OBP. (They were at .324 through July 2.) Interestingly, the Giants aren’t doing a great job of starting rallies. They own a .303 OBP with the bases empty and a .299 OBP with none on and none out. Once someone gets on, however, their OBP goes up to .392. This helps to explain why they’ve also scored two runs or less seven times in this stretch of games. Sometimes, the rallies never start.

Which is where the pitching comes in. They’ve won four of the seven games in which they allowed two runs or less. The great pitching staff now has an offense that can support it, which takes the pressure off so they can shutdown the opposition on nights when the batters go south. This is a winning combination. When both sides work, as on Tuesday, blow outs occur.
