Big Day for Kotsay

Mark Kotsay is a double away from the cycle, but he might not get a chance to complete it as his two-run triple in the 11th gives Chicago a 6-4 lead over Detroit. He’s driven in four runs today as his home run came with a man on.

Update: The White Sox win 6-4, taking three out of four from the Tigers and burying them nine games out of first place in the AL Central.

By the way, I was just checking the Day by Day Database, which goes back to 1957, for most career missed cycles. That is, players who picked up three of the four cycle hits. Barry Bonds did that 44 times, with Alex Rodriguez second at 41, Billy Williams third at 39 and Larry Walker fourth at 38.

Speaking of hitting for the cycle, did you happen to catch the the 7th inning of the Reds/Pirates game yesterday? It went like this:

Heisey, 1B, Votto, 2B, Gomes 2B, Francisco K, Nix 3B, Hernandez BB, Janish, HR, Bruce, K, Phillips, LO. The team hit for the cycle in an inning! They put up 6 runs in the inning, and won 9-4.

I can’t recall that ever happening. It’s one of the many reasons I find baseball fun to watch.
