A Guillen Gone

The Royals designated Jose Guillen for assignment:

After failing to find any willing trade partners for the mercurial outfielder/designated hitter, the Royals took matters into their own hands and designated Guillen for assignment.

The Ball Star blog recounts some of Jose’s memorable moments in Kansas City. Of course, the biggest problem with Guillen was that he didn’t hit. He posted a .256/.308/.420 slash line for the Royals, generating -1.2 WAR. In other words, the Royals would have done just as well plucking an outfielder from AAA and paying him the league minimum for three years. I’d be very surprised if they found a taker for him. Teams will tolerate a lot of someone helps them win. Jose no longer fits that description.
