Crossing the Line

Sports Agent Blog looks at the fine line between working as an adviser to a college bound draftee and crossing over to becoming his agent.

I wonder if anyone at the NCAA ever thinks, “Our rules are antiquated and complicated. Maybe we should just throw them out and start over to reflect the realities of today.” The Olympics pulled this off. The distinction of amateur and professional no longer held, and they changed the rules. It’s time the NCAA rethought their standards.

In regards to the Olympics, the original reason for the distinction seems to have been to keep poor and middle class athletes from competing in the Olympics! Removing it wasn’t quite like breaking the color barrier, but its amazing how these reactionary rules take on a life of their own.

And consider if a student had a music scholarship to college — if he got a paying gig in a bar somewhere, no one would be screaming that he’s violating the scholarship or anything, he’d be praised for having a job to help with expenses. Yet with athletes, it’s completely the opposite. Remember the one college athlete who was, IIRC, already a professional skier and that was causing problems with his IIRC football scholarship.
