Scary Reds

The Reds rotation appears to be on it’s way to a long period of domination. Travis Wood pitched another fine game Thursday night, allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings in the Reds 9-5 win over the Diamondbacks. Mike Leake impressed with no minor league experience until the length of the season caught up with him. Homer Bailey is getting his control together. None of them have hit their primes yet. We’ve seen other trios of young pitchers crash and burn, but we also saw Mulder, Hudson and Zito dominate for the Athletics for a number of years. If the Reds can get a solid five years out of the three, they’ll be in the hunt in the NL Central for most of that time.

Beyond those three, you still have Volquez, Cueto, and even Chapman to bolster the rotation. Think of the possibilities.

The Reds also took chance on “little” men for the mound.

Leake is listed at 6’1″ which I’m sure is a big lie-maybe he’s that tall on tip toes.

Wood is listed at 5’11” which I think is a stretch too.

Bailey took a long time to get here, and finally has looked good, if inconsistent at times.

They also have several interesting pitchers in the upper levels of the minor leagues for use in trades or on their own mound.

I like what they are doing there.
