Approaching 400

Albert Pujols hit his 32nd home run in the Cardinals 6-3 loss to the Giants Friday night. That leaves him two short of 400, so the milestone homer could come at any time now. It’s significant, not because 400 is an important milestone anymore, but because he’ll be only the fifth player to reach 400 by his seasonal age 30 season. Alex Rodriguez (464), Ken Griffey, Jr. (438), Jimmie Foxx (429), and Mickey Mantle (404) are the only other players to accomplish the feat. (Eddie Mathews fell one homer short.) Note too, that apart from Alex Rodriguez, all these players burned out in the 30s, and Alex’s hip may take him down that path as well. Bonds, Aaron, Ruth and Mays had great finishes to their careers to reach their lofty home run numbers. We’ll see, as time goes on, if Pujols and Rodriguez and buck the trend.
