Division and Wild Card races tightened a bit late Monday night. The Rays moved into a tie with the Yankees in the AL East as they downed the Angels 4-3. The Rays jumped on old teammate Scott Kazmir early for four runs, but the Angels shut them down the rest of the way. James Shields, however, was up to the task of protecting the lead as he walked just one and struck out 10 in six innings. It was his fifth double digit strikeout game of the season.
The Braves failed to widen their lead in the NL East as they lost to the Rockies 5-4. Todd Helton gave Rockies fans a blast from the past as he went four for four with a double, driving in two runs. It was the 35th time Helton collected four hits in a game, but only the second time since the end of the 2007 season.
The Giants gained the in Wild Card race, and helped the Cardinals gain the NL Central with an 11-2 blowout of Cincinnati. Aubrey Huff missed the cycle by a triple, driving in three runs, and Pablo Sandoval picked up three hits and three RBI as well. Matt Cain pitched a great game, and got more runs than he needed for a change. With a 3.07 ERA, he’s just 10-10.
