Alfredo Simon of the Orioles is suspected of killing one man and wounding another.

Police said Simon shot and killed Michel Castillo Almonte, 25, and wounded his 17-year old brother on New Year’s Eve in Luperon, a coastal town in the northeast of the section of the Caribbean island. Police said Simon — a native of the Dominican Republic — fled after the shooting.

The Orioles have not commented yet on the situation. Simon’s representatives say they have been in contact with their client but are not prepared to comment at this time.

At age 29, Simon played his first full major league season in 2010. If the charges are true, it probably will be his last.
