    Might have something to do with the offensive jump in the AL from 1977-1980. I suspect this was related to the ball as it was the first years in which Rawlings was given exclusive rights to manufacture MLB balls.

    1987 was another anomaly on the upside, then the ball was dead for a few years before the offensive surge from 1993 onward. Steroids, juiced ball, or a combination.
