Money With Vernon?

In the comments to the previous post, there were different amounts of money being sent to the Angels with Vernon Wells. According to this report:

Neither general manager, Tony Reagins of the Angels nor Alex Anthopoulos of the Blue Jays, would specifically say whether any money was included in the trade to offset Wells’ salary. Instead, both GMs danced around the question, simply saying it was announced as a 2-for-1 swap.

Reagins said Wells’ contract was “tolerable” and that he got approval from upper management.

This really strikes me as the Angels decided they had to so something, and this was the best they could do. A good catcher should be worth more than that.

If the Blue Jays put Wells on waivers last September (and I am not sure they did not) I doubt anyone would have claimed him, even though they would not have had to give up anything.

Looks like the Rangers are a lock for the AL West. Mariners and A’s still can not score, and the Angels did not improve much if at all, although they will get Morales back at 1B.
