It seems like every year there is a story about how we’ll never see a 300 game winner again. This was a popular topic in the 1990’s, and we saw how that worked out as a number of pitchers reached the milestone. Take these stories with a grain of salt.
This is not just an article: he made this into a book, too (note the byline)!
Of course, those that have reached 300 W recently started their careers in the mid-late 80’s when PC’s were not as strict (giving pitchers a better opportunity to gram a W in a close game) and through the steroid era (ala Clemens).
CC Sabathia is about 140 W’s away, and after Pettitte and Moyer neither of whom will reach 300 W, only Wakefield is close to 200 W.
Also, IIRC, only 6 pitchers in MLB history since 1901 reached 300 W without pitching into their 40’s.
I guess you can not ruke it out, but it will be very rare and only pitchers who pitch on great teams for most of their career will attain it.
“Have We Seen The Last Of Baseball’s 300 Game Winners” is going to be a short book. One word – “No”
