Ethier’s Record

Did anyone know that this record existed before Andre Ethier was about to break it?

Andre Ethier set a major league record for the longest April hitting streak with an RBI double that gave him a hit in 23 straight games, but the Florida Marlins remained just as hot with Tuesday’s 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ethier broke Joe Torre’s longstanding record. Torre, who managed Ethier on the Dodgers between 2008 and 2010, set the mark in 1971 while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals.

In all my years at ESPN, no one ever asked about a hitting streak during a month. Streaks were streaks, it didn’t matter when they happened, unless it was to start a season. I have argued with people about carrying hitting streaks over year to year. I don’t think you should because you shouldn’t get a long rest during a streak. A streak was a streak, however, and the time didn’t matter.
