There seems to be an outcry to change the rules to stop collisions, but you could cut down on them by doing what Bill James suggested at least twenty years ago (one of the Abstracts, possibly even the first Historical Baseball Abstract)–enforce the existing rules by making any attempt by the catcher to obstruct the plate without actually having the ball constitute interference, just as it would be on the bases. Simple, and doesn’t require a rule change that might have to be rescinded later if it starts screwing up the game on the field.
