Games of the Day

The Orioles and Pirates start off the day with Zach Britton facing Kevin Correia. The 23-year-old Orioles rookies is more than holding his own in a tough division, bringing a 3.10 ERA into the game. He’s not outstanding in any of the three true outcome categories, but he’s not bad at any of them either. He’s gets a very high ground ball rate, however, and the Orioles infield is scooping them up. Correia cut his walk rate almost in half compared to 2010 and is 1.3 walks per nine below his career rate. He sacrificed strikeouts in order to issue fewer free passes, but so far the tradeoff is working.

David Price and Shaun Marcum meet in Milwaukee as the Rays take on the Brewers. David Price seems to be a victim of FIP regression as he lowered that stat from 3.42 last season to 3.00 this season, but saw his ERA jump from 2.72 to 3.61. Marcum pitched well against the Rays during his time in the AL East, posting a 3.17 ERA.

The Mariners and Nationals play the rubber game of their series with Erik Bedard battling John Lannam. Bedard is on a roll, having allowed as many as three runs just once in his last nine starts. That’s good for a 1.70 ERA over that time. Lannan’s ERA this season is about 3.5 runs lower at home than on the road. The big difference is home runs, as he allowed just two of his eight long balls in Washington.

Finally, Nick Blackburn tries to keep the Twins winning ways going as he takes on Ryan Vogelsong and the Giants. Nick found his control in late May. Over his last five starts he walked four in 35 1/3 innings. Vogelsong owns an 0.96 ERA at home as batters hit just .203/.248/.263 against him in San Francisco.

Enjoy!
