Carlos Beltran made a speech to the Mets clubhouse after Fred Wilpon criticized his stars in print.
“I know, based on the comments that were made, some of the players were going to be asked about me and Jose Reyes and David Wright, and it could become a big issue,” Beltran said. “I said: ‘Let’s forget it and move on. As a team, we can’t let it become a big deal. Let’s concentrate on playing baseball, because we are good enough to compete.’ ”
The Mets heeded Beltran’s words. They forged ahead to play even better. Despite a rash of injuries, they took a respectable 46-44 record into Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants and went into the All-Star break above .500.
Good for Carlos. He’s having a great season, better than I expected. The Mets trail the Giants 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh.
