Zach Britton was great as he earned a short shutout in a pitchers duel against Bartolo Colon as the Orioles drop the Yankees 2-0. Zach kept everyone expect Mark Teixeira off balance, as he walked one and struck out five. Two of the four hits he allowed came off the bat of Teixeira. Colon matched the shutout until the seventh, when he allowed single runs in consecutive innings. The Orioles continue to pitch well as they’ve allowed one run or less in five of their last six games, winning all six.
Tampa Bay defeats Toronto 12-0 as David Price also pitches seven shutout innings. He struck out 14 of the 26 batters he faced for his 12th win of the season. Desmond Jennings, who homered in his first two at bats, ended up with a four for five day with a walk, raising his OBP to .440. That’s just what the Rays need from the leadoff spot. The Rays are also pitching very well, having allowed two runs or less in five of their last six starts.
The Yankees loss and the Rays win moves Tampa Bay to six games behind the Yankees for the wild card. New York’s tough schedule the rest of the season could help Tampa more than it helps the Red Sox. The Yankees and Rays play six more times this season, ending the schedule in New York.
