One Bad Inning

Yovani Gallardo got off to a bad start, and that was all it took for the Cardinals to win game three of the NLCS. He gave up four runs on four hits in the first. He was wild as he walked three (one intentionally) and threw a wild pitch. It looked like the Cardinals were going to walk all over Yovani, but he pitched out of trouble for the next four innings, keeping St. Louis off the board until the bullpen could take over.

The Brewers did mount a comeback, as Chris Carpenter was not that sharp. He gave up six hits in five innings, and a total of three runs in the second and third innings. The bullpens came on in the sixth, and pretty much shut the door. St. Louis relievers did not allow a base runner as Jason Motte earned a four-out save.

The decision to start Mark Kotsay in centerfield turned out poorly as he made a base running blunder in the top of the first, turning a fly ball with men on 1st and 2nd into a double play. In the bottom of the inning, he failed to make a catch that speedier centerfielders would make. He did hit a solo home run, but without his mistakes, that might have been the game winner.

The Brewers need a win to send the series back to Milwaukee. Randy Wolf and Kyle Lohse battle tomorrow night.
