Rangers Relief

The Rangers bullpen stepped up so far in the post season, pitching lights out:

Bullpen Innings Runs Allowed Per 9 IP K per 9 IP BB per 9 IP HR per 200 IP
Yankees 23.7 1.90 10.65 2.66 8.5
Rays 12.3 2.19 5.84 5.84 32.4
Rangers 36.0 2.25 8.00 3.00 22.2
Cardinals 26.3 3.42 6.49 1.71 15.2
Brewers 28.3 3.81 11.75 3.18 21.2
Phillies 10.0 4.50 7.20 3.60 0.0
Diamondbacks 15.3 4.70 5.87 2.93 13.0
Tigers 32.0 7.31 9.28 3.94 31.3

During the regular season, the Texas pen allowed 4.55 runs per nine, 7.7 K per 9, 3.12 BB per 9, and 29.5 HR per 200 innings. So the Rangers relievers are pitching slightly better than in the regular season, but they simply are not allowing many runs. They’ve only allowed six hits per nine versus 8.1 hits per nine during the regular season.

Will this last? The pen is getting taxed in the playoffs, having been used more than other teams. If balls in play against them stop finding fielders, the Tigers have a chance to score a few more runs. Looking at Detroit’s relief numbers, however, Justin Verlander really needs to go deep in Thursday’s game.
