Devon Young sends this video of Milt Pappas‘s near perfect game, lost when the umpire call a check swing a ball on a 3-2 count with two outs in the ninth.
The didn’t have the close up replays of the strike zone in 1972, so it’s tough to get another view of the swing. However, it seems to me that Larry Stahl‘s swing is very similar to the one that ended Don Larsen‘s perfect game.
I would even say that the check swing in Larsen’s game is even shorter. What do you think?
Did Babe Pinelli ever say that the final third strike in the Larsen game was a failed checked swing and not simply called? You can’t really see where the pitch was in the film.
