Oakland Keeps Trading Pitchers

The Oakland Atheltics unloaded two more pitchers, this time trading them to the Rockies:

Seth Smith spent the winter in wonderland. Today, the questions and uncertainty ended. With the outfielder viewed as a luxury item after the signing of free agent Michael Cuddyer, Smith was shipped to to the Athletics for right-hander Guillermo Moscoso and left-hander Josh Outman. The Rockies are also closing in on signing a veteran starter, creating more depth for a young rotation.

Seth posted a good OPB and a good slugging percentage for his career, but as you can see from his home/road split, most of that occurred at Coors Field. Outman, one of the most appropriately named pitchers in baseball, has not yet recovered his strikeout rate after undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing all of the 2010 season.

Moscoso pitched his first full season in the majors in 2011, and he was not able to replicate his high strikeout rate of his minor league career. If he pitches to contact in Coors, he’ll need a very good defense behind him. On top of that, he induces a very low percentage of ground balls.

Looking at this trade, it seems both teams acquired players that were totally unsuited for their ball parks. That makes me wonder if these are intermediate deals, with both the Athletics and Rockies looking to flip these players.

Disappointed that Outman and Balfour will no longer be on the same team.
(And I still don’t understand why Joe Maddon once called on Grant Balfour when facing the Orioles with bases loaded in early 2010.:-)
