I had thought this because baseball managers, unlike their counterparts in other sports, actually go out on the field and the uniform is required for that purpose.

Clicking on the link, I see that there is a Rule 3.15 that only allows players and coaches in uniform -and team photographers- on the field. There is alot of other historical information in the article, but most of it seems to be irrelevant.

A manager could wear a suit to the day and delegate any duties that involved going to the field to a coach or the captain, but what would be the point? Maybe for someone combining the field manager and general manager duties it would make sense to operate this way, but that is also rarer in baseball than in other sports.
