Low Power Sox

South Side Sox made the following observation:

Dan Johnson owns the only White Sox home run over their first two spring training games.

Home runs came recently to the White Sox as a weapon. If you look at the top ten career leaders in home runs for Chicago, every one but Bill Melton played since the 1980s. (Melton’s career ended in 1977.) From 1921 to 1980, a 60 year period in which the AL embraced the home run following Babe Ruth‘s monster 1920 season, the White Sox were the only one of the original eight AL teams to hit fewer than 5000 home runs, 4632. That’s 498 fewer than the seventh place team, the Senators/Twins. The team’s lack of power was a big reason for their long term Championship drought.

Olde Comiskey was very large as well, making the pursuit of HR hitters seemingly futile, so the Sox went wi speed and pitching…

The White Sox are tradition- poor that they retired Harold Baines’ number. While he was still playing. For the Texas Rangers.
