Baseball Past and Present sings the praises of Bobby Grich:
In addition, he hit the 11th most HRs by a second baseman. If you want to talk about clutch, well, four of Grich’s HRs came in a 1-0 game. This feat was done five times by Ted Williams. Bobby Bonds, Jim Wynn and Dwight Evans are the only other players in history to do it four times. That’s the list of guys with this awesome display of “clutchiness.”
How can a player with the name of Grich not be clutch. It screams dirt dog. Grich not only hit well for a second baseman, he flashed the leather as well, maybe the best of his generation (depending on what generation you assign to Joe Morgan). Imagine Dan Uggla with range and sure hands. Bobby rates as one of my favorite players of any era.
If ‘clutchness’ has been generally dismissed as non-existent by a number of other studies, why do people insist on saying things like this??
Alex Hayes » I think it’s there for the people who would want to use it as an argument. I don’t think it was there as a serious part of the discussion.
