Two Fours

Derek Jeter and Matt Wieters each went four for four Monday night, but Jeter and the Yankees ended up with more runs as New York wins their first game of the season 6-2. Baltimore outslugged the Yankees, with seven of their 13 hits going for extra bases, including a Wieters home run. The Yankees only knocked out three extra base hits among their 11, but they drew seven walks to none for the Orioles.

Ivan Nova was very sharp, walking striking out seven in seven innings. He did give up ten hits, but the Orioles went just 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position. Last season, the opposition hit just .215 against Nova with runners in scoring position.

Jeter also sac bunted, successfully. With runners on second and third and nobody out, and a four run lead (I think it was the sixth inning), that tactic does not give away much Win Expectancy, but it does add to Yankee fan agita.

Funny you should mention that sac bunt. I happened to see it on the Extra Innings package. Orioles play-by-play announcer Gary Thorne said that if he had the Yankees offense, he would have the entire team bunt maybe five times a year.

Which started a humorous conversation with color guy Jim Palmer about Earl Weaver, and his hatred of the sac bunt.
