Brian’s Brain

Brian Roberts returns to the Orioles Tuesday night after suffering a concussion in 2011:

The 34-year-old second baseman, who has not played a major league game since May 2011 because of post-concussion symptoms, will be added to Baltimore’s 25- and 40-man rosters sometime Tuesday so long as symptoms do not surface from his final rehab game at Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday.

Up to Sunday, Roberts had played 13 minor league rehab games over the last two weeks, hitting .263/.370/.474 and experiencing no concussive symptoms.

I have my doubts about Roberts effectiveness. The concussion was part of a series of injuries that limitE. Roberts to 98 games since the start of the 2010 season. Brian’s seasonal age stands at 34 years, so his best seasons are likely behind him. While Robert Andino is not hitting well, his defense helps him to a positive WAR, and he’s likely to give the Orioles one win above replacement if he stayed at second. I hope I’m wrong and Roberts does a great job of getting on base for the team, but until he shows he can hit major league pitching, I’ll remain skeptical.

After I sent you yesterday’s piece, there was more at Camden Chats today. His assessment is in line with yours. Still it’s nice to hope.

Thanks for the Q & A on the Orioles. First time in years that they’ve at least been interesting.
