The Padres swept the Mariners, winning 6-2 on Thursday night.
In an interleague matchup of last-place teams, Padres starters yielded only two earned runs in three games at Seattle.
Padres fans shouldn’t get too excited about this, however. While the Padres starters produced good results in the series, the process wasn’t all that great. In 20 innings, the starters walked nine batters and only struck out 13. It strikes me the low hit totals by the Mariners had more to do with Seattle’s lack of talent than the Padres starters.
Good point on the Padres’ starters, but three of their projected starters are on the DL, two gone for the season, and two others are on the DL as well, not to mention three triple-A starters considered call-ups have been on the DL all season. Considering the loss of nine starters, that’s the best performance they can hope for.
At least the DL gave back Quentin, whose presence in the lineup has added a run per game to their offense, the battered bullpen has settled down since Huston Street returned from the DL, and the two kids who replaced Orlando Hudson and Jason Bartlett are producing major league defense up the middle. If not for injuries, it could have been a respectable team.
