Coaching the Numbers

Matt Fincher and Tim Bogar talk about offensive value percentage, OVP. Bogar is the bench coach for the Red Sox. Fin her is a college coach.

Update: What happens when batters fail? Are some failures better than others?

OVP tries to put value on statistics not used before.

Rewards based on a continuum, hits valued the most, first pitch out in an inning the least.

A plate appearance of eight or more pitches is a positive, as it cuts into a pitcher’s pitch count.

Eight pitch at bats raise the OBP for the batter or the next batter.

Six base running components. Two positive, four negative.

The formula looks like (opportunities- negatives)/opportunities. Bogar is looking at these numbers from a coaching stand point.

Looking at Tampa Bay versus Baltimore in 2011, the Orioles hit better, but the Rays do other things better. Beat the Orioles in OVP.

I’ll try to write about this more tonight. I wish they had addressed the coaching aspects of this stat.

As an Astros fan I’m glad Bogar is doing well.

That said, he was about as bad a hitter MLB has ever seen. If he’s giving tips on hitting….

The guy could field and it didn’t hurt Bagwell and Biggio were on the other side of the infield.
