Google honors Jackie Robinson on the 94th anniversary of his birth. The image is here, if the google icon is gone in the future.
A few years ago, I was discussing Robinson with my father. The two were very close in age, my dad turning 92 last September. With my life long interest in baseball, it’s not until I’m in my forties that dad told me:
- He was a fan of Robinson going back to Jackie’s days playing UCLA football.
- He and my mother were in the same restaurant with the Robinsons once (brush with greatness).
I asked dad if he said anything to Jackie, and he said no, he didn’t want to bother him.
Robinson was a great one. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie about him this spring.
Thank you Mr. Robinson …
Your father probably figured if he bothered him in the restaurant, Robinson would just quickly steal home.
