Prado Underpaid?

I’m quite surprised Martin Prado agreed to a four-year, $40 million contract with the Diamondbacks:

Prado will earn $7 million this season, then $11 million each of the following three years. He could have gone through arbitration and become a free agent after this season, perhaps getting a more lucrative deal.

“Since I got to the big leagues I’ve been looking to be more secure,” he said, “to be in the right spot and not have to worry about going through free agency. The way I am right now, I’m happy. I’m going to play more relaxed. I think I needed it.”

The DBacks should be happy and relaxed, too, as they are likely get a good bit of residual value from Prado. Over the last four seasons he’s been worth about $16 million a year.

I always worry about players going for security that close to free agency and taking the money on the table which is less than they could have got waiting a year. Makes me wonder if they are not feeling 100%.

Becketts 2010 extension is a classic example.
