Games of the Day

The Red Sox take the field at Fenway for the first time since the Marathon Bombing as the Royals send old Boston nemesis James Shields against Clay Buchholz. Shields is pitching better than his 3.43 ERA, with 20 K and just three walks in 21 innings. Opponents have gone 5 for 15 against him with runners in scoring position. Buchholz walked 10 while striking out 23 in 22 innings, but allowed just 11 hits, none with runners in scoring position.

Scott Kazmir returns to the majors after a year off in 2012 and just one game in 2011. He leads the Indians against the Astros and Philip Humber. In his one start at AAA, Kazmir struck out five batters in five innings without allowing a walk. That control will be the key to his comeback. A win by Houston and Humber means the Astros will trade places with the Indians for worst record in the American League. Philip pitched well so far, holding opponents to a .289 OBP.

Finally, the Rockies go for their eighth straight win as they host the Diamondbacks. Tevor Cahill takes on Jorge de la Rosa. Cahill is coming after batters early this season, with 18 K in 18 innings. He’s never come close to equality in his strikeouts and innings before. de la Rosa pitches at home for the first time this season. He owns a 4.69 ERA at Coors pitching for the Rockies despite a hit strikeout rate.
