Kyle Blanks singled four times Monday night, the last two driving in three runs, including the game winner, as the Padres beat the Phillies 4-3 in ten innings. Cliff Lee came into the ninth with a shutout and a 3-0 lead, but gave up hits to the first two batters. That brought on Jonathan Papelbon, and Blanks greeted him with a single that drove in both runners. A passed ball would tie the game as Blanks scored that run, setting up his big single in the tenth.
Blanks is hitting in the clutch this year, with a .354/.430/.608 slash line with men on base. He’s hitting for power when it will do the most good, and generally keeping rallies going. Monday night, it helped turn a loss into a victory.
