The Nationals and Mets play the rubber game of their series as Gio Gonzalez faces Zack Wheeler. Gio is doing well in terms of strikeouts and walks, but has already allowed nine home runs after giving up nine in all of 2012. Wheeler was supposedly tipping his pitches, so we’ll see if he makes an adjustment Sunday afternoon.
The Brewers try to stop the Pirates rampage as Milwaukee sends Kyle Lohse against Charlie Morton. Lohse only walked 15 batters in 92 2/3 innings, so ten of the 14 home runs he allowed were solo shots. Morton returned just in time to bolster an injured Pirates rotation, and posted a 2.81 ERA in three starts. That ERA comes despite the opposition hitting .316 against him with runners in scoring position.
Seven game winners square off in Texas as Mat Latos battles Yu Darvish. Latos is undefeated on the road this season, 3-0 in nine starts with a 2.93 ERA. It looks like he suffers from poor support away from home. Darvish tries for his first win in June. He’s 0-1 in five starts despite a 2.78 ERA in the month.
Finally, Drew Pomeranz returns to the majors for the Rockies as they host Madison Bumgarner and the Giants. Bumgarner owns a good walk rate this season, but it’s up from previous years. He’s walked 30 this season after walking 46 in 2012 in twice the innings. Pomeranz pitched well at Colorado Springs this season. Like Denver, the Rockies AAA club plays at high altitude in a high run environment. Pomeranz upped his AAA K-rate, posted a 4.20 ERA, but his record was 8-1. In this case, his wins and losses indicate he was better than the competition. We’ll see if he can make his minor league success transfer to the majors this time.
Enjoy!
