The best games on Wednesday all involve western division teams. The Mariners send Felix Hernandez against Texas and Derek Holland. The King is pitching better than his last two seasons, with more strikeouts and fewer walks, with an ERA down to 2.70. Texas knocked him around a bit this season, with 21 hits in just 12 1/3 innings. That despite 14 K and just three walks. Holland dominated Seattle in his only start against them this season, holding them scoreless for 6 2/3 innings while striking out ten.
The Dodgers try to continue their move up in the standings as Zack Greinke faces Tyler Chatwood in Colorado. Greinke overall pitched well at Coors in his three appearances there, but did give up three unearned runs to go with the four earned. Chatwood owns an amazing 2.13 ERA (amazing for a Rockies pitcher), 3.14 at home, 0.82 on the road. He’s the only pitcher in the majors this year with 50+ innings and no home runs allowed.
The Cardinals continue their series with the Angels as Shelby Miller takes on Jerome Williams. Miller’s road numbers are not as impressive as his home numbers; about an inning less per start and a much higher walk rate. Williams is holding batters to a .219 BA with runners in scoring position.
Finally, trade target Matt Garza meets Bartolo Colon as the Cubs and Athletics battle in Oakland. Garza only won one game on the road this season despite a 2.76 ERA in five starts. Colon is 5-0 at home with a 2.45 ERA in eight starts. Something has to give.
Enjoy!
