One of These Players is not Like the Other

Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon each received suspensions performance enhancing drug use in 2012. Through this date in 2012, Melky was hitting .357/.399/.534 with 37 extra base hits. After a one for four against the Rays, Cabrera is hitting .278/.322/.361 with 18 extra base hits.

Bartolo was a full Colon today, however, pitching a shutout against the Angels. That raises his record to 13-3 and lowers his ERA to 2.52. At this point last season, he was 6-8 in 18 starts with a 3.88 ERA. His three true outcomes were 5.5 K per 9 IP, 1.5 BB per 9, and 1.13 HR per 9. This season, those stand at 5.0 K per 9, 1.1 BB per 9, and 0.60 HR per 9. He’s not striking out as many, but his walks and home runs are much better. If the PEDs were helping him last season, their lack this year is not showing up in Bartolo’s stats.

In the wake of Biogenesis, with anywhere from 20-100 players listed as using PED’s and most all of them never having tested positive, why are we presuming that players are clean, even if they they had been caught before. Maybe they just adjusted their dose/usage patterns.
