FM and GM

Mike Scioscia says he and Jerry Dipoto get along fine:

Scioscia said the only decision he’s publicly had a problem with was the firing of hitting coach Mickey Hatcher in May 2012. Beyond that, Scioscia said the rest is just normal disagreements regarding player evaluations that are common in any relationship between a manager and GM.

“You’re not going to agree on everything. That’s healthy,” Scioscia said. “You have to have conversation. You’ve got to throw it on the table and just see if it has merit, talk about it, peel the paint off of it and I feel that’s happening.”

Scioscia believes both sides have moved on from the decision to let Hatcher go and he still believes his relationship with Dipoto is sustainable.

It would not surprise me if one or both were fired, given the team’s performance with a very high payroll. When a team signs players, and they don’t produce, it seems to me that falls more on the GM than the manager.

Well, which one of them decided the best use of resources was signing an all star on the downside of his career for a big chunk of money? Which one decided to bring in Joe Blanton? Also, shouldn’t every AAA team have a Blanton type or three that you can use for the minimum baseball wage? The trade of Walden for Hanson? The signing of Ryan Madson? Yeah, I think we know who doesn’t know his stuff in this organization.

The person who doesn’t know his stuff in LAAnaheim is the one in the owner’s box. Scott Miller of CBS Sports has a very good piece out now on the tyrannical Arte Moreno. The Angles are suffering from a severe case of Steinbrenner-McLane syndrome. It can only be cured by a Morenoectomy. Switching Scioscia or Dipoto is just rearranging the deck chairs on the LAA Titanic.
