West Passes

Former pitcher David West died at age 57 from brain cancer:

West, a member of the 1993 National League championship team, had been battling brain cancer. He spent four seasons with the Phillies, making 122 appearances from 1993-96. Used primarily out of the bullpen, West compiled a 15-18 record and a 3.50 earned run average with the Phillies.

The left-hander had the best season of his career in that 1993 campaign, appearing in 76 games as a reliever (the second most in the National League) and posting a career-best 2.92 ERA with three saves. He made three appearances during the 1993 World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

West struggled with control during his career, finishing with 4.9 BB per 9 IP. He did limit hits, however, allowing 525 in 569 1/3 innings.

The 1994 season was actually his best in terms of rWAR, 2.1 versus 1.1 in 1993. He worked as a swing man that season with 99 innings as both a starter and a reliever. His ERA stood at 3.55 as he kept the ball in the park in a high HR season. With that year shortened by a strike, it’s easy to forget the great home run hitting of that year. Matt Williams might have broken Roger Maris‘s record.
