Pitching Great at Coors

Chad Bettis pitched the fourth best game at Coors Field in terms of Game Score Monday afternoon. He tossed a shutout against the Giants, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out seven. That’s good for a Game Score of 90. The record at Coors is 91, held by three pitchers. On 9/17/1995, Pat Rapp tossed a one hitter in a 17-0 Marlins win. Exactly one year later, on 9/17/1996, Hideo Nomo pitched a no-hitter as the Dodgers won 9-0. Then, on 7/24/2006, Jeff Francis delivered a 91 for the Rockies, as he threw a two-hitter. The Rockies beat the Cardinals 7-0 in that game. Looks like September is a good month for great pitching performances at Coors.

A Measure of Offense

Alfredo Simon and Chris Archer each pitched complete game one-hitters Thursday night. Two low hit games in one day (0 or 1 hit allowed) is a rare occurrence, but for a while those days became extinct. Here are all the days with multiple low hitters since the mound was lowered in 1969:

Between the two no-hitters thrown by Dave Stewart and Fernando Valenzuela on 6/29/1990 and Hideo Nomo and Kerry Wood one-hitters on 5/25/2001, there were no multiple days. That’s nearly an eleven year drought. So during the big offensive era, while there were plenty of low hitters, we saw no two on the same day. There was a long drought between 2004 and 2012, but since then it’s happened fairly regularly.
