Games of the Day

The Astros can clinch the AL West with a win at Toronto and an Oakland loss. Josh James takes on Sam Gaviglio.

Luis Severino goes for this 19th win as the Yankees face the Rays and Jake Faria. The Yankees magic number to take home field in the wild card game is four, as the Yankees hold the intra-division tiebreaker, although that could change.

Milwaukee send Gio Gonzalez against the Cardinals and Austin Gomber as the Brewers simultaneously try to hold off St. Louis and catch the Cubs. Gonzalez is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA since joining Milwaukee. Gomber is 6-1 in his rookie season with the Cardinals, allowing four home runs in 69 1/3 innings.

Vince Velasquez takes on Chad Bettis in Colorado, and given the ERAs of the two pitchers, this could be a slugfest.

The Dodgers need to keep winning to win the West, and Walker Buehler takes on Matt Koch in Arizona toward that end. Koch makes hitters smile as he allowed 18 home runs in 82 1/3 innings.

Games of the Day

The Indians and Cubs renew their 2016 World Series rivalry as Trevor Bauer faces Tyler Chatwood. Bauer ranks sixth in the majors in HR allowed per 9 IP at 0.46. The interesting thing about the pitchers leading in the category are their high strikeout rate. Hard throwing pitchers might be though of as supplying some momentum to the ball-bat collision, but this group is tough to loft. Chatwood comes in second if you lower the qualifying innings to 43. He does not have the high strikeout rate.

Chris Sale takes on Jake Faria as the Red Sox visit the Rays. Sale owns a bit of a reverse platoon split this season. Right-handed batters are hitting .181 against the lefty, left-handed batters are hitting .235. The lefties only have one extra base hit, while righties have 17. Faria mostly worked on the two times through the order rule. His last time out, however, the Rays let him stay in the game to throw eight scoreless innings. It doesn’t look like an opener will start this game.

Games of the Day

The Rays and Red Sox take the field again as Jake Faria faces Rick Porcello. Faria is approaching 100 MLB innings, and so far shows a good strikeout rate, but needs to improve his walk and home run rates. Porcello is off to a good start in what the Red Sox hope is a bounce back year, allowing the Rays one run in 5 1/3 innings in Porcello’s first start of the season.

Seattle sends Mike Leake against the Twins and Jose Berrios. Since joining the Mariners last September, Leake owns a 4-1 record and a 2.54 ERA. He walked just five batters in 39 innings. Berrios started his 2018 season with a shutout, allowing just three hits and one walk.

Finally, the Braves try to take advantage of Coors Field to add to their run total as Anibal Sanchez takes on the Rockies and Chad Bettis. Sanchez had a tough time finding a home, but he allowed just one hit in three innings so far. He has not pitched at Coors Field since 2011. Bettis is 14-8 at home in his career despite a 5.25 ERA.

Double Perfecto

Carlos Carrasco and Jake Faria are each perfect through four innings as the Indians play the Rays. Faria struck out five batters so far, Carrasco six. This could be a lot of fun. Both are under 50 pitches.

Update: Edwin Encarnacion homers leading off the fifth inning to break up Faria’s perfect game. The Indians lead 1-0.

Update: Faria has a disastrous fifth inning as the Indians score five runs. Carrasco walks a batter in the bottom of the fifth, but keeps the no-hitter intact.

Games of the Day

The Nationals visit the Cubs for an afternoon game and a possible playoff preview. Tanner Roark takes on Kyle Hendricks. After a horrible June is which Roark allowed six home runs in 30 1/3 innings, he posted a more reasonable 3.52 ERA in July, striking out 26 in 23 innings. Hendricks pitched well in two starts since returning from the disabled list, no home runs, no walks, and eight strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings.

After pitching for Cardinals his whole career, Jaime Garcia plays for his third different team this season as he leads the Yankees against the Indians and Trevor Bauer. Over all his is 5-7 with a 4.29 ERA. A higher home run rate than his career averages hurt him this season, which should be a pretty common refrain given the increase in power this year. Bauer’s ERA is about two runs better at home than on the road, and the Indians did a good job of getting him more starts and inning in Cleveland.

Yu Darvish makes his Dodgers debut against Jacob deGrom of the Mets. Darvish was hurt by the Ballpark in Arlington this season, with a 5.38 ERA at home, 2.49 on the road. He gave up fewer home runs away, but he also allowed fewer hits. deGrom is pitching well for a poor team, with a 12-4 record in 21 starts. He struck out 162 batters in just 139 2/3 innings.

Finally, the Brewers bring up Brandon Woodruff, a seasonal age 24 pitching prospect. He didn’t sign with the Rangers when they drafted him in the 5th round of 2011, and wound up being drafted by the Brewers in the 11th round in 2014. He is a low HR, low walk, decently high K pitcher who struggled at AAA this season. He faces rookie Jake Faria of the Rays. Faria, seasonal age 23, is proving he belongs in the majors with a 5-1 record in 10 starts and a 2.93 ERA. A right-handed pitcher, left-handed batters are 10 for 60 against him with no extra-base hits.

Games of the Day

The Rays series at the Yankees concludes with a battle of young starters as Jake Faria tries to prevent a sweep against Jordan Montgomery. Faria comes into the game with a 5-1 record in nine starts. His strength so far is a reverse platoon split. The right-hander holds left-handed batters to a .182/.324/.182 slash line. It looks like he is pitching around power, so the walks don’t hurt him much. Montgomery walked 33 batters in 108 innings, and his weakness is allowing home runs, 15 so far. Ten of those came with men on base.

Kevin Freeland is scheduled to pitch for the Rockies in game one of a double header, Erick Fedde making his Naitonals and major league debut in opposition. Fedde is taking the slot of Stephen Strasburg. Freeland is the rare Rockies pitcher with better results at home than on the road. He allowed 5 home runs in 61 2/3 home innings, eight home runs in 54 2/3 road innings. Fedde has a decent strikeout rate in the minors, but he is very good at limiting walks.

Adrian Beltre needs one hit for 3000 as the Rangers face Wade Miley of the Orioles. Beltre is 6 for 21 against Miley in his career with four strikeouts.

Games of the Day

I just want to note that both Mike Montgomery and Jordan Montgomery are on the same rotation, as are Sonny Gray and Jon Gray. We can only hope this eventually leads to a really confusing day where both Montgomerys face a Gray. Of course, with Doug Fister and David Price both on the Red Sox, the long awaited Price-Fister pairing will not happen any time soon.

Jordan Montgomery takes on Jose Berrios as the Yankees and Twins play the rubber game of their series. After an excellent June, Montgomery owns a 5.27 ERA in July, thanks in part to four home runs allowed in 13 2/3 innings. Berrios is a typical Twins pitcher in that he walks very few batters, but unlike others of the past 15 years, he strikes out a good many batters as well.

The Rays own the third best record in the American League as they face Oakland, holding the second worst. Jake Faria takes on Sonny Gray. Faria is off to a great career start, 4-0 with a 2.00 ERA in seven starts. The Rays are 6-1 in those games. Opponents are 4 for 27 against him with runners in scoring position. Gray owns good three-true outcome numbers, but opponents are hitting .288 against him with runners in scoring position, compared to a .227 overall BA allowed.

After a tiring night, and a very tiring post break for the Red Sox, the series with the Blue Jays continues with Aaron Sanchez facing Drew Pomeranz. In his three starts on the road, Sanchez owns a 1.89 ERA, thanks to just one home run allowed in 19 innings. He allowed five home runs in 13 innings at home. Pomeranz is 4-1 with a 3.20 ERA since June 1, allowing just four home runs in 45 innings pitched.

Games of the Day

Milwaukee travels to Chicago leading the Cubs by 3 1/2 games in the NL Central, one of the most surprising results of the season so far. Zach Davies battles Mike Montgomery. Davies is 9-4 despite a 5.03 ERA. The Brewers scored five or more runs in 11 of his 17 starts. He had his ups and downs against the Cubs in his career, although his three-true outcomes are not bad. Montgomery’s low 2.80 ERA is thanks to just three home runs allowed in 64 1/3 innings.

Mike Foltynewicz faces Gio Gonzalez as the Braves travel to Washington. Foltynewicz owns a 6.14 ERA career against the Nationals, but most of that comes from being creamed in his last start against them on June 12th. He has walked 11 Nationals in 22 innings. Gonzalez tries to win a second game at home this season. He is 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA in eight starts.

The Rays are very much in the AL East and AL Wild Card hunt as they host the Red Sox for the weekend. Chris Sale starts the series against rookie Jake Faria. While Sale impressed with his strikeouts this season, he is doing so with great control, walking just 22 batters in 120 2/3 innings. Faria is undefeated, going 3-0 in his first five starts with a 2.23 ERA. He allowed three home runs in 32 1/3 innings, but they do little damage as he holds opponents to a .246 OBP.
